Luster Dust is a nontoxic food decorating
powder that gives a surface metallic sheen. It is
sold at specialty kitchen stores, crafts stores,
and online and costs about $4 for a 2-gram jar.
Cake decorators mix the powder with clear
vanilla to make a paint, but we just dusted it on
dry using a small paintbrush,
above.
GOLD-DUSTED INDIAN CORN
Partially peel
back the husk of an ear of Indian corn and wrap
it under the ear. Lightly brush gold Luster Dust
onto the kernels and husk as desired. Tie ribbon
around the end of the corn and add a name tag.
INDIAN CORN CENTERPIECE
Fit a shallow
bowl with dry floral foam. Insert wheat stalks
around the sides. Partially remove the husks
from several ears of Indian corn and arrange
them on top of the wheat.
FALL BOUQUET
Arrange roses, dahlias,
and rose hips (seed pods of roses, commonly
available at florists in fall) in a small vase or
pitcher. Gently brush gold Luster Dust onto
flower petals and rose hips.
CORNUCOPIA
Arrange pears, apples, and
gourds in a cornucopia. Brush silver Luster
Dust onto the top and stem of a white mini
pumpkin gourd that’s clean, dry, and at room
temperature. To get an opaque finish, apply
the powder with a heavy, even hand.
